What is what to do when snake plant gets too tall?

When your Snake Plant gets too tall, there are a few options to manage its size:

  • Repotting: If the plant has outgrown its current container and become root-bound, consider repotting it into a larger pot. This gives the roots more room to grow and can help to balance the plant's overall size. See Repotting for details.

  • Division: Snake plants propagate readily through division. Carefully remove the plant from its pot and separate the rhizomes (underground stems) into smaller sections. Each section can be planted in its own pot to create new plants. Instructions are at Division.

  • Cutting/Propagating Leaf Cuttings: You can cut off a section of the snake plant leaf and propagate it. This won't reduce the height of the original plant, but it creates new, smaller plants and removes some of the height from the original by taking away a leaf or two. Refer to the guides at Propagating%20Leaf%20Cuttings.

  • Reduce Watering & Light: While not a long-term solution, less watering and indirect sunlight may slow the growth, helping to keep its size manageable.
